Magic Tricks: How We Make Tiered Spenders

Magic Tricks: How We Make Tiered Spenders

Greetings, denizens of MegaTen!

I’ve had players ask how we decide on the items for tiered spenders. So here’s a sneak peek at the magic trick! :D

Bacon goes on a mission.

The first thing I do is check notes from previous tiered spenders. Every item a player’s ever asked for?—It’s cataloged somewhere! Although the ease of navigating those catalogs… that’s questionable.

Then there’s a compare-contrast phase, where I look for parallels between the catalog and:

  • items people are buying on the forums marketplace;
  • items people are buying in-game;
  • items people have mentioned in random forum threads;
  • items people have provided in questionnaires hosted on the blog and Facebook.

The marketplace is key, since that lets me look at the current Macca value of items. But the Macca value—the supply and demand—that ends the moment I pass the tiered spender to management.

Management reviews the mission.

Not all tiers are built equal. That is to say, you may see a pattern like:

  • Tier One: It’s okay.
  • Tier Two: It’s really good!
  • Tier Three: Meh.
  • Tier Four: Mehhh.
  • Tier Five: It’s amazing!

Why do we do this?

We can’t give away every fantastic item all the time, or they’d no longer have that beautiful shine. Since there are players who can’t afford Tier Five, we try to wedge something decent at a lower tier; but for those that are climbing their way up to Tier Five, we create so-so options for Tier Three and Four. That way, you don’t feel like the jump between Good Item A and Good Item B is vacant.

tl;dr: Tiered spenders require filler.

This is only one of the things management looks for. They also ask questions like:

  • When’s the last time this item was offered?
  • Are we decreasing the demand before it’s time? (This is especially true for recent FC releases.)
  • Is this item currently available elsewhere within the game / charge shop?
  • Do these items compliment things currently available in the charge shop?

The best thing I get asked is, “Can we add more items? This isn’t good enough.” It’s like an epic filter.

But wait. It doesn’t end there!

Toaster watches for missions.

It may seem like this exchange involves two parties:

  • Bacon (marketing);
  • Management (managing >_>);

But your resident Game Master is also on the lookout for the goods! He keeps his eyes peeled for:

  • Items mentioned by mentors;
  • Items brought to his attention in-game or on the forums;
  • Items he discovers with his mastery of MegaTen.
Toaster’s also key for putting together the last draft of the tiered spender, with things like user feedback, testing, etc.
You know what they say… good things come in threes. That involves tiered spender magic, too. ;)
You tell us! We’d love to hear your thoughts.
  • What was your favorite tiered spender?
  • If you could have one item in a tiered spender, what would it be?
  • Let’s say we had a tiered spender raffle for an in-game item. What would be the coolest thing ever for one lucky spender to win?

State of the Nations: Varik Sweeps

State of the Nations: Varik Sweeps

Welcome back to the State of the Nations on the ATLUS ONLINE blog!

Starting this week, we’ll be featuring the State of the Nations on Thursdays for both the blog and forum communities. Each one will come with different commentary, so hardcore fans can visit both State of the Nations to get a double-scoop of awesome. :)

Forneus

Varik swept all Clash of the Nations last week, with Empire coming in second. What could be bringing Varik to the headfront of Clash? Congratulations to the Confederation!

In Invasion of the Zealots and War of Dominion, Varik doesn’t make the cut. Empire defeats the most golems (14 kills!), then storms into Kingdom and takes the castle. Congratulations, Latugan!

The Decisive Battle of Sieghelm is where Kingdom gets a chance to shine. They take a decisive victory, with Varik closely behind. Thumbs up, St. Pflestein!

The verdict? All nations are experiencing victory, but each battlefield changes the fray. Keep up with the neck-and-neck war results in your conquest to dominate Forneus!

Astaroth

In the grand lands of Astaroth, Clash of the Nations fell divided between Kingdom and Varik, with Empire coming in second during the 9/7 war. Grats to everyone who participated. ;)

In Invasion, Kingdom took the forefront with 14 golems, while Varik came in second as the challenger. Varik defeated the defending kingdom and seized the Dominion castle.

Kingdom continued its winning streak in Siege of Sieghelm, with Varik in second place. Awesome job, Kingdom!

Friday Afternoon with Bacon

Friday Afternoon with Bacon

The ATLUS ONLINE blog accrued an unprecedented amount of spam comments about bacon recipes, bacon boys, and banana milkshakes. This is a level up from the hundreds of “lista de emails” that roll in each week, yet we expect so much more!—legitimate comments like this:

Persona 4 is the best RPG ever made.

Only pathetic mongrels with no taste or class would not care about it.

That’s  fan speak. Right there.

This afternoon also included tremulous collections of poll data, Crowns deals that’ll knock your socks off, and rockin’ participation from the ATLUS ONLINE Facebook community. Then—before lunch claimed us all—we announced three winners for the MegaTen caption contest:

Protip: Click the image to enlarge it instead of burning your corneas with the 6pt font.

For fans waiting on the future tiered spender polls, expect the following items to pop up for vote during the next few days:

  • Data Ticket (Young Soul)
  • Destruction Avatar Ticket (Reverse)
  • Devil Prison Avatar Ticket
  • Sword of Heaven and Earth + Majesty COMP

Will you choose one of these epic rewards? …Or will the other mystery items get the majority vote?

You tell us! We’d love to hear your thoughts.

  • What’s your favorite breakfast?
  • What items would you liked to have seen in the Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 polls?
  • What’s your all-time favorite data ticket?

Thanks for your continued interest in the ATLUS ONLINE blog! :)

Demonic Giveaway Inspired by Our Favorite Games!

Demonic Giveaway Inspired by Our Favorite Games!

So Persona 4 Arena is my new favorite fighting game. It’s gotten to the point where I question if it’s healthy. I found myself on Ami Ami last night, looking up Naoto Shirogane towelettes to take to the gym (which, by the way, are sold out on preorder! Q_Q)… at 2 A.M. in the morning… while nursing my BattleSpace queue…

Yeah, I’m an ATLUS fan! :D Here you thought I just liked to troll you on the forums.

Anyway, this got me thinking. If Persona 4 Arena is like crack injected into my former-RPG’d veins, surely there are other ATLUS ONLINE fans that’d like to sink their teeth into the game. Am I right, or am I right?—which is why you can now participate in our Demonic Back-to-School Giveaway, with 6-6-6 prizes:

  • 6x Persona 4 Arena for the system of your choice (US residents only)
  • 6x $25 e-pins
  • 6x $50 e-pins (That’s, like, eight Special Refresh β)

It’s easy to enter. All you got to do is make a new character in Pandora Saga and/or MegaTen—or a new account in BattleSpace and/or Knights of the Sky—and hit level 20. The more ATLUS ONLINE titles you do it in, the better chance you have at winning the prize. The raffle tickets are cumulative: level 20 in one game, 1 raffle ticket; two games, 3 raffle tickets; three games, 6 raffle tickets; four games, 4 raffle tickets.

We also have a MegaTen giveaway going on right now for Persona 2: Innocent Sin, the sister to one of my top 3 favorite RPGs, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment! I have no idea why you’re reading this blog when you could be nailing these giveaways RIGHT NOW.

Speaking of favorite games, I asked around the office and found out some awesome ATLUS ONLINE team trivia:

  • Tasty Cake’s favorite ATLUS ONLINE game is Pandora Saga. “I still dig the amount of possible character builds.”
  • One of our marketing gurus—you may see him on the forums as “Moderator”—says Persona 4 Arena is his favorite ATLUS game, period. I don’t know if I’d go that far… I’m still married to Catherine. But that’s got to say something about how addicitive P4A can be.
  • Toaster’s favorite retro game is Gyruss! He’s even got Gyruss swag.

You Tell Me: It’s awesome to hear from the community!

  • What’s your favorite ATLUS game?
  • What’s your favorite ATLUS ONLINE game?
  • What’s your favorite retro game? We’re talking Sega Saturn and older, yo.

Teaser of a teaser

Teaser of a teaser

I’m teasin’ Toaster by writing a teaser about his teaser.

Toaster and Bacon are sitting at their cubes near Bossman. Toaster perks up.

Toaster: “I really want to tease ‘em.”
Bacon: “You can’t tease ‘em yet.”
Toaster: “But I really want to.”
Bacon: “Ask Bossman.”
Toaster: “Can I tease them?”
Bossman: “I think you need to wait to tease them.”

Toaster sulks to desk.

Toaster: “I’m going to work on the teaser.”
Bacon: “So you can tease them?”
Toaster: “Yeah. What do you think of this?”

The scenery goes black. Sorry, can’t divulge the teaser during the tease of the teaser.

So, yeah.

Toaster’s teasing something tomorrow.

What a tease.

Season 2 Preview

Season 2 Preview

Greetings, Admirals!

Today ATLUS ONLINE opened the gates on Pinwheel, an all-new BattleSpace server! We also announced the end of Season One, scheduled for 9/22. When Season Two starts, Andromeda and Milky Way will be merged together on another server, Cartwheel. It sounds like big things are on the horizon… But beyond fancy Champion Coins, what changes can you expect from Season Two?

More Commanders
Players will have access to all-new commanders with combo abilities, such as the Naturalist (Gas and Funds gather rate up), the Polarizer (torpedo weaponry/shields up+), and more!

More Formations
Prepare to restrategize your commanders, from more mundane options to a wider variety of star formations!

More Storage
Two seasons means more precious commanders to store. Thankfully, you’ll have the storage you need for all your favorites!

More Rewards
Your rankings mean something throughout the season—not just at season end! Weekly and monthly rewards will give top players a chance to reap some awesome rewards.

More Intergalatic Threats
As if space pirates weren’t enough, the insectoid race, Vaminos, are plotting to overtake the universe…

We hope you’re as excited about the changes to come as we are! Give it your all for the end of Season One. :)

Friday Morning with Bacon

Friday Morning with Bacon

Hi all, Bacon’s Taken here!
Ever wonder what a Friday Morning with Bacon is like? I’m here to divulge. :)

It started with sitting down, waking up the computer, and logging into the kitten desktop of the ages:

Sometimes it pays to be forgetful… I always forget this cuteometer is hidden behind my million windows! After recovering from the morning squees, I stretched my fingers and got ready for the MegaTen forum crawl.

With the MegaTen 2012 Olympics, I thought I’d run into all the wacky and awesome MegaTen news for the week. But when I stumbled into Gunblazer 42′s link to the review from MMO Grinder, I thought, “Oh man, this is good stuff!” So I plopped it onto the MegaTen Facebook. (If you’re looking to recruit your friends for MegaTen, MMO Grinder hits all the basic mechanics a prospective player would want to know. It’s a fantastic and objective 24-minute video.)

Then I moved to the link Toaster Pastry left in my Instant Messenger: Botanica’s demonic doodles. I’ve got a weakness for the Creative Side of our community, which made this a special treat. Botanica’s Deviant Art is equipped with beautiful MegaTen artwork. Can you find the Jack Frost?

Next came the rereads from yesterday’s mega-event… I’m dubbing the Fish Crash! (Toaster Pastry’s going to kill me for bringing up this one.) An unintentional and monolithic fish spawn caused the server to go haywire for a couple of minutes. Some players are calling it the Greatest Event of All Time. Courtesy of MingMei’s screenshots:

It’s kind of reminiscent of this Jack Frost debacle:

With the MegaTen forum crawl completed, I moved on to Pandora Saga, and took a quick glance at BattleSpace and Knights of the Sky. This reminded me to log into BattleSpace and set up my queue. (Who am I in BattleSpace? You’ll never know… ;) ) And now here we are, at the ATLUS ONLINE blog.

There are other nuisances, like e-mails, Excel spreadsheets, and Notepad++, but that stuff’s just morning boring. (Woot, rhyming typo.) With lunchtime around the corner, I got to ask… Was a Friday Morning with Bacon everything you’d thought it’d be?

Oh, right. Let’s wrap up with… You tell us! We’d love to hear your thoughts.

  • Do you prefer this inside look in ATLUS ONLINE, or blog posts about the latest promotions and events?
  • Jack Frost or Goldfish?
  • What’d you do with your Friday morning?

Thanks for visiting the ATLUS ONLINE blog. :D
