Magic Tricks: How We Make Tiered Spenders

Magic Tricks: How We Make Tiered Spenders

Greetings, denizens of MegaTen!

I’ve had players ask how we decide on the items for tiered spenders. So here’s a sneak peek at the magic trick! :D

Bacon goes on a mission.

The first thing I do is check notes from previous tiered spenders. Every item a player’s ever asked for?—It’s cataloged somewhere! Although the ease of navigating those catalogs… that’s questionable.

Then there’s a compare-contrast phase, where I look for parallels between the catalog and:

  • items people are buying on the forums marketplace;
  • items people are buying in-game;
  • items people have mentioned in random forum threads;
  • items people have provided in questionnaires hosted on the blog and Facebook.

The marketplace is key, since that lets me look at the current Macca value of items. But the Macca value—the supply and demand—that ends the moment I pass the tiered spender to management.

Management reviews the mission.

Not all tiers are built equal. That is to say, you may see a pattern like:

  • Tier One: It’s okay.
  • Tier Two: It’s really good!
  • Tier Three: Meh.
  • Tier Four: Mehhh.
  • Tier Five: It’s amazing!

Why do we do this?

We can’t give away every fantastic item all the time, or they’d no longer have that beautiful shine. Since there are players who can’t afford Tier Five, we try to wedge something decent at a lower tier; but for those that are climbing their way up to Tier Five, we create so-so options for Tier Three and Four. That way, you don’t feel like the jump between Good Item A and Good Item B is vacant.

tl;dr: Tiered spenders require filler.

This is only one of the things management looks for. They also ask questions like:

  • When’s the last time this item was offered?
  • Are we decreasing the demand before it’s time? (This is especially true for recent FC releases.)
  • Is this item currently available elsewhere within the game / charge shop?
  • Do these items compliment things currently available in the charge shop?

The best thing I get asked is, “Can we add more items? This isn’t good enough.” It’s like an epic filter.

But wait. It doesn’t end there!

Toaster watches for missions.

It may seem like this exchange involves two parties:

  • Bacon (marketing);
  • Management (managing >_>);

But your resident Game Master is also on the lookout for the goods! He keeps his eyes peeled for:

  • Items mentioned by mentors;
  • Items brought to his attention in-game or on the forums;
  • Items he discovers with his mastery of MegaTen.
Toaster’s also key for putting together the last draft of the tiered spender, with things like user feedback, testing, etc.
You know what they say… good things come in threes. That involves tiered spender magic, too. ;)
You tell us! We’d love to hear your thoughts.
  • What was your favorite tiered spender?
  • If you could have one item in a tiered spender, what would it be?
  • Let’s say we had a tiered spender raffle for an in-game item. What would be the coolest thing ever for one lucky spender to win?

Teaser of a teaser

Teaser of a teaser

I’m teasin’ Toaster by writing a teaser about his teaser.

Toaster and Bacon are sitting at their cubes near Bossman. Toaster perks up.

Toaster: “I really want to tease ‘em.”
Bacon: “You can’t tease ‘em yet.”
Toaster: “But I really want to.”
Bacon: “Ask Bossman.”
Toaster: “Can I tease them?”
Bossman: “I think you need to wait to tease them.”

Toaster sulks to desk.

Toaster: “I’m going to work on the teaser.”
Bacon: “So you can tease them?”
Toaster: “Yeah. What do you think of this?”

The scenery goes black. Sorry, can’t divulge the teaser during the tease of the teaser.

So, yeah.

Toaster’s teasing something tomorrow.

What a tease.

Friday Morning with Bacon

Friday Morning with Bacon

Hi all, Bacon’s Taken here!
Ever wonder what a Friday Morning with Bacon is like? I’m here to divulge. :)

It started with sitting down, waking up the computer, and logging into the kitten desktop of the ages:

Sometimes it pays to be forgetful… I always forget this cuteometer is hidden behind my million windows! After recovering from the morning squees, I stretched my fingers and got ready for the MegaTen forum crawl.

With the MegaTen 2012 Olympics, I thought I’d run into all the wacky and awesome MegaTen news for the week. But when I stumbled into Gunblazer 42′s link to the review from MMO Grinder, I thought, “Oh man, this is good stuff!” So I plopped it onto the MegaTen Facebook. (If you’re looking to recruit your friends for MegaTen, MMO Grinder hits all the basic mechanics a prospective player would want to know. It’s a fantastic and objective 24-minute video.)

Then I moved to the link Toaster Pastry left in my Instant Messenger: Botanica’s demonic doodles. I’ve got a weakness for the Creative Side of our community, which made this a special treat. Botanica’s Deviant Art is equipped with beautiful MegaTen artwork. Can you find the Jack Frost?

Next came the rereads from yesterday’s mega-event… I’m dubbing the Fish Crash! (Toaster Pastry’s going to kill me for bringing up this one.) An unintentional and monolithic fish spawn caused the server to go haywire for a couple of minutes. Some players are calling it the Greatest Event of All Time. Courtesy of MingMei’s screenshots:

It’s kind of reminiscent of this Jack Frost debacle:

With the MegaTen forum crawl completed, I moved on to Pandora Saga, and took a quick glance at BattleSpace and Knights of the Sky. This reminded me to log into BattleSpace and set up my queue. (Who am I in BattleSpace? You’ll never know… ;) ) And now here we are, at the ATLUS ONLINE blog.

There are other nuisances, like e-mails, Excel spreadsheets, and Notepad++, but that stuff’s just morning boring. (Woot, rhyming typo.) With lunchtime around the corner, I got to ask… Was a Friday Morning with Bacon everything you’d thought it’d be?

Oh, right. Let’s wrap up with… You tell us! We’d love to hear your thoughts.

  • Do you prefer this inside look in ATLUS ONLINE, or blog posts about the latest promotions and events?
  • Jack Frost or Goldfish?
  • What’d you do with your Friday morning?

Thanks for visiting the ATLUS ONLINE blog. :D

MegaTen Cuties Event | Cait Sith

MegaTen Cuties Event | Cait Sith

Greetings, MegaTeners!

This event is closed as of 12:00 P.M., PDT, the beginning of today’s maintenance. We will announce the two winners and send out prizes during today’s maintenance. Thank you for your entries!

The ATLUS ONLINE blog is excited to introduce the first of a series of events for the cutest demons in free MMORPG MegaTen. From now till the 6/20 maintenance, we’re shouting out for players to create an Internet meme for our Demon Diary mascot…

Cait Sith!

Now’s your chance to win an Ariadne Thread, so listen up!

The Rules

Follow these four easy steps to submit your entry:

  1. Capture a screenshot of Cait Sith.
  2. Then create an Internet meme, using your preferred image editor or trusty ol’ MS Paint.
  3. When you’re done, upload the image to your favorite image hosting provider (Image Shack, TinyPic, etc.).
  4. Once you have your link, submit a comment so we can click it and check your entry.

Of course, the community may sneak peeks at your entries, too… ;)

For example:

Hi, ATLUS ONLINE Blog! I wanted to participate in the contest for your free MMORPG, MegaTen. Here’s my entry:  http://i49.tinypic.com/2m6wd4m.png

The Prizes

We will distribute a 3-Day Ariadne Thread for every ten entries (1-10, 11-20, etc.), to a max of 20 3-Day Ariadne Threads for 200 entries. The more entries we receive, the more prizes that go out, so make sure to share this event with your friends!

Good luck, and we look forward to your submissions. :)

Haiku for Incense

Haiku for Incense

Hey there, MegaTeners!

This contest has now ended. We will make another blog post later today, once we’ve redeemed the prizes for the winners of the event. We appreciate your overwhelming interest!

You rocked our baboon butts with the You Tell Us! questionnaire. We got five times as many participants as we expected. This flailing monkey really loves you! We’ll send out the rewards to the winners during today’s maintenance, then wrap everyone’s feedback in pink tissue paper and glittery ribbons for our management team.

Now it’s time to celebrate this overwhelming success with a bigger and better event!

Mega Haiku

We’ve gotten bunches of short story entries from the MegaTen community, despite our lackluster choices for rewards. For those of you who didn’t want to enter because, “Eww, cameo,” here’s another opportunity to bust out your writing skills!

The Rules
Reply to this thread with a haiku that incorporates one or more of the following words:

  • Mega
  • Demon
  • Imagine

Taken from dictionary.comhai·ku, non, a major form of Japanese verse, written in 17 syllables divided into 3 lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables, and employing highly evocative allusions and comparisons, often on the subject of nature or one of the seasons.

Only one entry per player, please! Make sure to include your e-mail in your comment. Feel free to deviate from themes of nature, even if it’s non-traditional. Contest ends next Demon Diary, 5/30, at 11:00 A.M., PDT.

The Reward
Thanks to all the feedback we received, we’ve rewarding the winners with…

Incense of Mastery!

Prize amounts are determined by how many entries we receive. It’s tiered in two ways:

- 1 prize for every 10 entries (ex., 1-10, 1 prize; 11-20, 2 prizes; etc.), max 15 prizes
- 1 incense for every 30 entries (ex., 1-30, 1 incense per winner; 31-60, 2 incense per winner; etc.), max 5 incense per winner

So the more the community participates, the bigger the reward! Spread the word. We could end up giving away 75 incenses if we get 150 entries! Also, we totally heard your call for Ariadne Thread, but that starred in What’s Your Codename. Alas!

We look forward to your submissions. :D

You Tell Us! | MegaTen Questionnaire

You Tell Us! | MegaTen Questionnaire

Greetings, Demon Busters!

This contest has now ended. We will distribute prizes during the 5/23 maintenance. Feel free to continue to comment with your feedback. Thanks to everyone who participated!

This week, the ATLUS ONLINE blog is teaming up with the superpowers of our GM team and forums to bring you an exciting questionnaire. This is our way of getting to know your previous experiences with our newest free MMORPG!

We’ll pick random commenters* to receive a free Character Ticket, so make sure to include an active e-mail account with your reply! We will distribute one Character Ticket per ten entries received. Our team will contact you via e-mail if you’re the winner! Event ends the next Demon Diary update, 5/22, at 11:00 A.M., PDT.

Please respond to this blog post with answers to the following questions. All answers will be read!

  1. When did you start playing SMTI, the Shin Megami Tensei free MMORPG?
  2. What’s your favorite demon?
  3. When you’re not busting demon coconuts, what other activities do you enjoy in-game?
  4. Other than Imagine, what’s your favorite Shin Megami Tensei title?

  7. What’s your favorite prize item from a MegaTen event? You can only name one!
  8. Hey, speaking of events, tell us about the best experience you had with a Game Master in the old MegaTen server.
  9. What do you miss the most about the old server? We’re tough cookies; tell it like it is!
  10. What do you anticipate from ATLUS ONLINE in the future?

We look forward to your submissions!

Updated: Due to community suggestion (that’s what this questionnaire is about, after all!), we’ve increased the amount of Character Tickets we give out for this event.

Community Brings Writing and Fashion

Community Brings Writing and Fashion

Greetings, Demon Busters! Welcome to the second installment of Demon Diary, the all-new social hub ATLUS ONLINE’s Shin Megami Tensei free MMORPG.

We’ve experienced so much excitement, roller-coasting, and overtime with the re-launch of ATLUS ONLINE’s Shin Megami Tensei Imagine servers, it’s got us chain chugging Starbucks and glasses of water! Fortunately, we’re not the only minds pouring creative juices into this momentous occasion.

Over in the ATLUS ONLINE forums, one of our awesome fans, MainCharacter, put in a suggestion for a new Creative Writing section. We’re not sure how this didn’t hit us like a crashing Astaroth, given we drafted up a Short Story Contest… But it’s there now, and we love the awesome suggestion!

We’ve also got some other exciting forum/event news. Nitchzombie put together a Fashion Event for SMTI! Like the Short Story Contest, entries must be submitted by May 31st, so get your screenshots clicking. Visit the forums post for official rules.

You could win a 90-day Item Depository—and even hotter—a “Miss Well Dressed” and “Mr. Well Dressed” badge for your profile! We’re hoping our contests can keep up with these sweet prizes in the future.

Speaking of prizes, we’re so appreciative of the suggestions we’ve received from the community—and awesome members putting together events like this—it’s making us skip through the office halls. Don’t feel shy; please keep the suggestions rolling in! The community involvement fires us up when the coffee runs out. ;)

On that note, you tell us. We’d love to hear your thoughts.

  • We asked this on the forums, but we want to give blog readers a chance to answer, too: What kind of prizes do you look forward to from MegaTen contests?
  • If you could design an event, what would it be?
  • Your turn to write! Name this demon, then whip up some dialogue for him:

MegaNews for SMTI Migration

MegaNews for SMTI Migration

Greetings, Demon Hunters! Welcome to the first Demon Diary.

We’re fixing critical bugs on the ATLUS ONLINE MegaTen free MMORPG server, and man, are the migrating Demon Hunters excited! We’re stoked, too.

To help with the massive amount of questions, our forum moderators have started daily Q&A threads. We’ve collected some highlights from our forum newscasters.

Monday

I just wanted give you guys a little update on what is going on. We’re currently in the testing phase for the game, trying to work out some nasty bugs. There is one that is pretty awful—not being able to change maps—so the devs are working on it as we speak. Still no official word on when the server will be fixed and ready to go yet. I got a chance to play a bit of the tutorial today. I can see why you all like it so much!

Tuesday

There was a huge bug where you couldn’t change maps. What this means is that you could play through part of the tutorial, then it would crash. If you are past the tutorial, then you couldn’t play.

Wednesday

For this Wednesday’s update, the Quality Assurance team and devs have let me know, “We’re smoothing out the final critical bugs.”

We encourage our more creative MegaTeners to enter the Short Story Contest. It’s a fun way to contribute to the ATLUS ONLINE Shin Megami Tensei Imagine community—with the chance for sweet rewards in all our free MMORPGs!

You tell us! We’d love to hear your thoughts.

  • If you could design a Shin Megami Tensei Imagine demon, what would it be?
  • What’s your favorite feature of MegaTen?
  • Will you enter the Short Story Contest?
